A Liberal MPP is introducing legislation to force the Progressive Conservative government to close a campaign finance loophole first exposed by the Star.Nathalie Des Rosiers (Ottawa-Vanier) wants Premier Doug Ford’s administration to tighten the political fundraising rules that were loosened in the fall economic statement.“I am seriously concerned that gaps in the language of the Election Finances Act can be manipulated to allow individuals to act as funnels for contributions from corporations and unions,” Des Rosiers, a former law school dean, said Tuesday as she tabled private member’s legislation.As disclosed by the Star in November, the government repealed a section of the bill that forced donors to “certify, in a form approved by the chief electoral officer, that the person has not acted contrary” to the ban on unions or corporations making donations in the name of members or employees.That meant companies or unions, which have been banned from making political contributions since 2016, theoretically make a donation to a party in someone’s name.“The changes to the Elections Finance Act brought in under Bill 57 make these shady contribution practices notoriously hard to catch, and this was not done by mistake,” said Des Rosiers.Ford has insisted that was not the intent of the amendment, emphasizing it was only altered because the disclosure form was a nuisance to contributors.The premier has also noted that his government’s rules now mirror the federal campaign finance laws.But Des Rosiers believes the Tories “purposely opened the loophole” because it could possibly bring in more donations.She pointed out that last month the governing party held a $1,250-a-ticket fundraiser that attracted 3,200 people.Ford banned reporters from covering the massive event in person after the Star disclosed that the Tories had enlisted lobbyists to sell tickets to their clients.Des Rosiers said that sugges ...
