It’s a tale of two colleges — and two approaches to sick days.Following labour law changes late last year that eliminated two mandatory paid emergency leave days for all Ontario workers, George Brown College says it’s removing them for its non-union faculty — “in compliance” with the new legislation. The catch: employers aren’t required to eliminate paid sick days. The legislation simply spells out a new legal minimum: eight days of unpaid absence for illness, family leave, and bereavement leave.A topsy turvy year of labour legislation — paid sick days and equal pay for equal work legislated by the Liberals through Bill 148, then removed through Bill 47 by the Conservatives — has presented employers with a choice: keep what they initially implemented, or revert to the minimum standard.Unlike George Brown, Humber College chose the former. In an internal memo obtained by the Star, Humber College said it “recognized the need” for paid sick days and decided to maintain them following Bill 47.It has also publicly stated its commitment to maintaining the now-defunct equal pay for equal work principles that required part-time, temporary, and casual employees to be paid the same as their permanent counterparts.
