Police released surveillance video Thursday of a vicious New Year’s Day assault that put a Toronto lawyer into a coma, as investigators appealed to the public for help in tracking down the two suspects.At about 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, David Shellnutt and a female companion were walking on Queen St. W., west of Bathurst St., when some men in a car made a “lewd remark” at the woman, Det. Scott Allan said at a news conference.Shellnutt responded by picking up a bag of garbage and throwing it at the car, a 2019 blue Dodge Charger.Two passengers got out of the car and one of them punched Shellnutt, knocking him unconscious as his head hit the pavement, the video shows. The other man punched him again after he was knocked out.The car then drove south on Bathurst St. and made a left turn onto Adelaide St. Police followed its movements through CCTV throughout the downtown — Allan said the vehicle was near King St. W. and Peter St. around 12:44 a.m.Shellnutt was initially in a coma, in critical condition but is now recovering, Allan said. He has short dark brown hair, worn in cornrows and a pencil beard. He was wearing a grey coat over a black hoodie, black jeans with holes, white socks and black shoes.The second suspect is Black, with a medium complexion, between 25 and 35 years old and about 5-foot-9 with a medium build. He has short, dark brown or black hair and a receding hairline. He has some facial hair, possibly moustache or goatee, and black prescription glasses.
