The painful introspection that has played out in public in the wake of alleged abusive behaviour at the hands of students of St. Michael’s College School has forced the prestigious institution to confront hard truths about its culture and history. St. Mike’s now finds itself among a group of schools and organizations that have had to take steps to ensure rules around acceptable conduct and inclusivity are understood and respected by their student athletes.On Wednesday, the Toronto all-boys private Catholic school announced an “action plan” in the wake of incidents involving students at the school, some of which have led to criminal charges and expulsions.The plan notably includes “more comprehensive instruction” for all grades that will touch on topics such as healthy masculinity, consent, and bystander behaviour. “Every one of our decisions has been based on one guiding principle: the safety and well-being of our students,” the school’s interim president Father Andrew Leung told reporters Thursday on a conference call.Leung was appointed to the position in late November following the resignations of president Father Jefferson Thompson and principal Greg Reeves. Those departures came amid an ongoing police investigation into a number of alleged incidents of assault and sexual assault at the school.
