Bail hearing resumes today for Meng Wanzhou, the Huawei CFO arrested on fraud allegations

VANCOUVER—The bail hearing for a top executive of one of China’s star telecommunications companies continues Monday morning at the B.C. Supreme Court in downtown Vancouver. Huawei Telecommunications CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested while transferring planes in Vancouver on Dec. 1. Wanzhou is being sought for extradition on allegations of fraud by authorities in the Eastern District of New York. During day one of her bail hearing on Friday, a warrant from authorities in New York revealed allegations that Wanzhou knowingly violated U.S. trade sanctions against Iran, and misled financial institutions. The Crown argued Friday that Wanzhou’s vast wealth means no surety or dollar amount would deter her from fleeing to China should bail be granted. Wanzhous’s defence argued her familial and economic ties to the city — as well as the reputation of her family — means she poses no flight risk.Follow investigative reporter Michael Mui (@mui24hours) below for live coverage of day two of the bail hearing.Read more:Bail hearing for Huawei exec reveals fraud allegations at heart of international strifeWhat we know and don’t know about the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng WanzhouChina calls arrest of Huawei CFO “vile in nature” as U.S. opens caseWith files from Perrin Grauer and Melanie GreenMichael Mui is a Vancouver-based investigative reporter.
