Locked-out Exhibition Place workers agree to contract offer

Councillor Jim Karygiannis is accusing the city of attempted union-busting after workers at Exhibition Place voted reluctantly on Thursday to accept an agreement that will allow limited contracting out. “We took a small union and we took a sledgehammer to it,” said Karygiannis, who represents Ward 22 (Scarborough-Agincourt), and is a member of the board of governors for Exhibition Place. The 450 unionized workers were locked out for 17 weeks. “It’s good that our members are going back to work, but we took it on the chin, hard,” said Justin Antheunis, president of Local 58 of the International Association of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).The union represents skilled workers who provide technical and staging expertise for events at Exhibition Place venues, including BMO Field and the Enercare Centre.The locked-out workers picketed the Canadian National Exhibition and the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. This was an attack on workers by the city of Toronto,” said Antheunis. Antheunis said workers rights are also under attack at the provincial level, where MPPs are discussing Bill 47, which proposes scaling back a wage increase introduced by Kathleen Wynne’s Liberal government and eliminating two paid sick days for employees.That bill is now before the province’s finance and economic affairs committee.Karygiannis said the city took advantage of the fact that the IATSE local is a relatively small one, and that the dispute was not overly disruptiv ...
