You know you’re a truly committed anti-Semite when you purchase a ticket to Fiddler on the Roof and actually sit through half the show in order to disparage the Jewish people.This appears to be what one pro-Trump, anti-Semite did this Wednesday at a performance of the classic Jewish musical at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore.According to the Baltimore Sun, a man seated in the balcony of the theatre shouted “Heil Hitler, Heil Trump” during the show’s intermission before he was escorted outside. It’s odd he didn’t do this during the performance itself, when such a statement might have had a more dramatic effect, but it just goes to show you that even fascists have manners. However, manners don’t count for much when your goal is to traumatize a room full of people.According to the Sun, the man’s outburst terrified audience members, not only because of its racist subject matter but because of what they understandably thought it might foreshadow: a mass shooting. Thank God it didn’t. This time, at least, words were words and not a prelude to violence. This doesn’t change the fact, however, that these words don’t exist in a vacuum. This incident is one of several anti-Semitic incidents that have occurred in North America in recent weeks and months, ranging from the deeply disturbing (the viral photo currently making the rounds of dozens of Wisconsin high school students dolled up for prom, doing a “Sieg Heil” salute) to the horrific: the murders of 11 Jews last month by a white supremacist at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, and earlier this month, the alleged attack on yarmulke-clad Jewish teens in North Toronto. According to an FBI report released this month, hate crimes in the United States rose 17 per cent last year, and anti-Semitic hate crimes increased 37 per cent.
