Stormy afternoon weather left thousands of people without power, and Toronto is headed into a warm night with more wind.Environment Canada is forecasting strong northwest wind gusts of up to 60 to 70 km/h this evening. The temperatures tonight will gradually cool down, from 20 C earlier in the night to 16 C by midnight. Tomorrow morning will see temperatures dip down to single digits, with a low of 8 C forecast for early Saturday morning. The weekend is forecast to bring out the sun again with a high of 17 C on Saturday, the first day of fall, and 19 C on Sunday. The city was under a severe thunderstorm watch for most about the afternoon, as the agency predicted potentially damaging wind gusting to up to 100 kilometres an hour. It ended the watch around 6 p.m.Toronto Hydro reported 8,625 people were without power, and it expected the figure to rise as more people reported damages. The utility said it would only be able to start in on repairs when the winds weakened, and it expected efforts to restore power to continue into tomorrow.Police said they received many calls for fallen power lines. On social media, several people posted photos of the aftermath of the storm, showing large trees down.Marjan Asadullah is a breaking news reporter, working out of the Star’s radio room in Toronto.
