Coroner´s inquest called into three prison drug deaths
(The Star Television)

A coroner’s inquest has been called into the drug overdose deaths of three prisoners in a southwestern Ontario jail, including an ultra-violent member of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club.Outlaw biker Floyd Deleary, 39, died on Aug. 23, 2015 at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre. The inquest will also examine the deaths of Justin Thompson, 27, and Murray James Davis, 24, who were inmates at the same jail and died in separate incidents.Thompson died on Oct. 31, 2016 in hospital after transfer from the jail while Davis died on Aug. 17, 2017 while in custody. No date or location has yet been announced into the inquest. The inquest was called to examine the events surrounding their deaths. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deathsDeleary’s criminal record began at age 18 and included manslaughter, after he killed a man with a baseball bat, and also gun running and home invasion. He was fighting a Crown attempt to designate him as a dangerous offender at the time of his death.Deleary was also still suffering from permanent head injuries after a severe beating by inmates in the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre in November 2013, at which time he was transferred to the Elgin Middlesex institution. Dangerous offender status brings an indeterminate sentence, meaning a prisoner could remain in custody for life.Peter Edwards is a Toronto-based reporter primarily covering crime.
