Looking ahead - far ahead in some cases - these are a sampling of what are expected to be the season’s most compelling matchups: Week 1 Manzano opens up defense of its state championship with an exceedingly difficult assignment: a Saturday afternoon road game at Las Cruces High where temperatures on the turf at the Field of Dreams could be approaching, or exceeding, 100 degrees. The slate closer to home is highlighted by Volcano Vista-La Cueva on Friday night at Wilson Stadium, plus Piedra Vista at Los Lunas in a matchup of what are expected to be a pair of Class 5A contenders, and the Thursday night opener at Wilson between two teams looking to elbow their way into the playoff picture...
