MUMBAI: It has completed a 123-year journey, but this might be the end of the road for the Byculla press. Opened in 1895, the Byculla press was the hub of printing activity for the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, meeting requirements from tickets to stationery. The move to shut down the press is in keeping with the recommendations of the Rakesh Mohan Committee of 2001 as well as the Railway Ministry´s thrust at exiting `unproductive ventures´ and redirecting its resources to more integral schemes. A decision to shut down all 16 printing presses of the Railways across the country was announced last year. Only five are operational today.
