The Purge series is one of the most successful horror franchises of recent years, with more than $399 million earned at the worldwide box office to date. The fourth movie--The First Purge--is currently in theaters and September will see the premiere of the new TV spin-off. It`s simply titled The Purge, and a new trailer was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con.The trailer is a good reminder of exactly what happens during the annual Purge night, where all laws are suspended and citizens are encouraged to act out their most violent and criminal impulses with no consequences. It looks like it`ll be the same mix of violent thrills and social satire that has made the films so popular. It`s written by franchise creator James DeMonaco and executively produced Jason Blum, the man behind such other horror hits as Get Out, Insidious, and Paranormal Activity. The cast includes Gabriel Chavarria (War for the Planet of the Apes), Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw), Reed Diamond (Designated Survivor), and Amanda Warren (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri). At the SDCC panel, director Anthony Hemmingway and producer Thomas Kelly spoke about the freedom they were given with the series, and if it was necessary to see the movies beforehand.`It was like having your own art project. Anything was possible. We were able to tap into a lot of things in today`s social climate and paint them on this big canvas,` Hemmingway said.
