Education minister dodges questions about change to sex-ed curriculum

The Progressive Conservative government is ducking questions about why it is reverting to the 1998 sex education curriculum while undertaking a review of the more modern 2015 syllabus.Education Minister Lisa Thompson, who refused to meet with reporters for a second straight day, told the Legislature a revamp is necessary because not enough parents were consulted before the 2015 revision.“We know the previous Liberal government got it wrong. Through our consultation process we’re going to get it right,” Thompson said during question period on Wednesday.“Teachers will be going back to curriculum they are familiar with because they are going to be using the curriculum that was utilized in 2014,” the minister said.Former Liberal education minister Mitzie Hunter said Thompson changes her mind on sex education “every day.”“We need a clear answer from her, and I would say the questions are going to continuously be asked until she provides a firm answer that she doesn’t change the next minute,” said Hunter (Scarborough-Guildwood).“To revert back to a curriculum from the last millennium, I think that’s an insult to students, frankly, who need to rely on an education system that will prepare them for the world that they live in,” she said.Between 1998 and 2014, students were taught from a 42-page curriculum that does not mention same-sex relationships, gender, consent or online safety.In 2015, a revamped 239-page curriculum was released. It addresses elements like cyber safety and encompasses societal changes such as the legalization of same-sex marriage, the protection of LBGT rights and the rise of social media.Social conservatives opposed that update.
