EDMONTON—After having led a life on the streets and battling alcoholism, one day, Trina Thomas found herself standing over a friend who was lying in a pool of blood after the two had a bout of hard drinking.The day that changed her life arrived in March 2014. She and Howard Sakebow were drinking at Sakebow’s residence in Taber, Alta. when an argument erupted.“He tried to stop me because I was trying to leave, and then I blacked out. Then I came to, and he was on the floor and there was blood everywhere,” she said.An article in the Taber Times said the Crown prosecutor at her court hearing said a witness saw Thomas grab two kitchen knives and tried to stab Sakebow. The Taber police responded to a 911 call from a nearby business. Sakebow was declared dead at the scene.Soon thereafter, Thomas entered the world of corrections at 28, convicted of manslaughter.Her story is one of many that end up inside Buffalo Sage Wellness House, an Indigenous healing lodge for women — the only one of its kind in Canada — near downtown Edmonton. Buffalo Sage was established in 2011, and Thomas was able to transfer there two years ago from the Edmonton Institution for Women. Being sanctioned under Section 81 also means it can be run by an Indigenous community that is responsible for implementing federal rules. However, they also operate as a guidance centre for the women, showing them an Indigenous culture they may have lost touch with or never encountered before, and ultimately aim to reintegrate the women back into society.There are 14 women on the wait list to get into the 28-bed complex. ...
