Former NHL goalie Ray Emery drowns in Hamilton Harbour
(The Star Movies)

The hockey community is in mourning after police confirmed that former NHL goalie Ray Emery drowned in Hamilton Harbour Sunday morning.Emery failed to emerge from the water at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club after going for a swim with friends around 6:30 a.m.“They went out for a swim and unfortunately he did not emerge after diving in,” said Insp. Marty Schulenberg. “We responded along with Hamilton Fire and EMS. Unfortunately, our efforts on the water and in the area just around the piers were met with negative results.”Speaking to reporters at the scene, Schulenberg said that they located Emery’s body in the afternoon, at 2:50 p.m., and that they do not consider the incident to be suspicious.Friends, teammates and other members of the NHL community are already reacting in shock.“Ray was instrumental in our run to the 2007 Stanley Cup Final, and at his best he brought a competitive edge and combative mentality to the game,” Eugene Melnyk, owner of the Senators, said in a statement.“On behalf of our entire organization, I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to Ray`s family, friends and loved ones.`“My wife and I were just talking about Ray Emery last night and to see the news of his passing this afternoon is equally sad and shocking,” Kyle Dubas, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, said on Twitter.“Ray’s smile and intelligence made him a magnetic personality. You always rooted for him to reach his vast potential even as he went through the many ups and downs of his playing career.”“I am f------ crushed. You will be missed deeply Ray,” Daniel Carcillo, who played with Emery on the Blackhawks team in 2013, said on social media. “I love you man.”Emery, 35, was born in Hamilton and had played for the Senators, the Anaheim Ducks and the Chicago Blackhawks, among others. He won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2013.With files from the Hamilton SpectatorI ...
