Toronto police are investigating whether a suspect pushed a man who was struck and killed by an oncoming train at Yonge/Bloor subway station Monday morning.The victim, in his early 20s, was on the eastbound platform when he was struck by the train at about 10:15 a.m., homicide Det. Rob North said at a news conference. Police are looking into whether the victim was pushed or stumbled. North said they don’t believe there was an altercation prior to the incident.“We believe he could have been pushed, but, again, we’re reviewing all angles of video surveillance to sort of get a better narrative of that,” North told reporters.Police arrested a man in his 40s but haven’t charged him. He had left the station but was arrested nearby, North said.When asked about whether a mental health issue was involved in the incident, North said it was too early to tell, and that police had not yet spoken to the arrested man. There were about 50 people who may have been in the station at the time and they are being asked to come forward and help police with their investigation.The incident happened at the far end of the platform, or just over the halfway point where the train had entered the station.“What we believe happened is our victim exits the platform area of the subway station, is proceeding to walk forward to the train, there’s some sort of interaction, and our victim ends up being hit by the train,” North said.It was not relatively busy on the platform at the time, TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said.The incident shut down a part of Line 2 between St. George and Pape stations for hours. Trains will bypass Yonge station for the rest of the afternoon rush hour as police continue their investigation.Bloor station on Line 1 is operating.Pushing cases on the TTC subway aren’t common.
