âI donât want to lose you this way.âThat was the plaintive cry from the mother of two young girls shot in a Scarborough playground in the chaotic aftermath of a shooting Thursday, a witness told the Toronto Star. Derek Wellwood, who does landscaping work in the neighbourhood every month, said he went over to the street near the playground after hearing the shots.He saw a young girl on the ground with six people around her.âThatâs when the mother said, âI donât want to lose you this way,â â he told the Star on Friday. âThe little girl said âI donât feel very well,â and then a moment later a neighbour came out with a fistful of paper towels, gave it to someone beside her and they put it on her. I did see her vomit on the ground.âREAD MORE:Tory calls for swift justice in âdespicable shootingâEmergency services were called to the scene at McCowan Rd. and Alton Towers Circle, near McNicoll Ave., after a suspect opened fire at another man in a small park at about 5 p.m., police said.There were 11 children in the park when the shooting happened, police said. Two girls, ages 5 and 9, were seriously injured. Paramedics said the younger child was shot in the abdomen and the other was shot in the ankle.Both victims were rushed to SickKids hospital and underwent surgeries. Police said both girls are in stable condition. Their injuries arenât life-threatening.On Friday morning, investigators released a photo of a black, four-door, 2007-2011 Nissan Versa sedan that may be connected to the shooting. Police are looking for two suspects â a driver and a male shooter who approached the park by foot before escaping in a car.The girls are students of Divine Infant Catholic School but principal Mark Novis would not reveal their names.Novis said he visited the hospital Thursday night to show support to the family.He said one of the girls will have a cast on her leg.
