Passengers at Pearson airport will be able to call for a car from a ride-sharing company when they land in Toronto starting today. In a pilot project announced Tuesday by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, passengers can now request an UberX or a Lyft on their app.“Following significant demand from our passengers, we believe that a pilot of full ride-sharing options is timely at Toronto Pearson, and in line with other airports across Canada and the U.S. already offering this service,” Scott Collier, GTAA vice president, customer and terminal services, said in a statement. “We appreciate the collaboration of the ground transportation industry in sharing their feedback and welcome another opportunity to offer our passengers choice in their transportation options.”In the past, you could take an Uber or Lyft to the airport. But regulations prevented car-sharing services to pick up passengers at Pearson unless it was a premium service like UberBlack. According to Uber, an UberX ride from the airport to Union starts at $33. A ride to Liberty Village starts at $30; to North York starts at $27.Pearson sees an average of 100,000 ride-sharing requests per month, the GTAA said. More than 47 million passengers go through the airport annually, and more than 49,000 work at Pearson.More to come
