Scully, head of curatorial affairs at the New Mexico Museum of Art, met Hammersley when she was a graduate student at the University of New Mexico during the 1990s. Hammersley moved from Los Angeles to Albuquerque to teach at UNM in 1968 and remained here until he died in 2009 at the age of 90.
