The booming avocado industry in Mexico has made growing the fruit unsafe for thousands of the country’s farmers and their families. In the city of Tancitaro — the largest producer of avocados in Mexico — the industry is so lucrative that drug cartels have taken over farms at times. The industry contributes more than $1.5 billion a year to the country’s economy with Tancitaro producing over $1 million worth of avocados per day. To fight back against the cartels, the farmers in Tancitaro have created a volunteer-based armed defence force, creating checkpoints at the city entrance and patroling streets in pickup trucks armed with machine guns. ......
