Almost 5,000 tickets have been issued for infractions during the King St. pilot project, say Toronto police in their latest update.Officers have handed out 4,559 tickets for “proceed contrary to a sign at intersection” since Nov. 12, police said in a news release Wednesday. An additional 404 tickets have been issued for disobeying signage. That’s an increase of almost 1,400 total tickets since the last update on the pilot project on April 6. The pilot project aims to prioritize streetcars on King St., by forcing drivers to make the next right turn at major intersections between Bathurst and Jarvis Sts. Const. Clint Stibbe said Wednesday that it would be difficult to compare the number of tickets issued on King to any other street in Toronto.“Intersection-related offences are something that we do see at a number of intersections throughout the city,” he said. “Officers will issue tickets for any infractions that we see. King St. has more officers on it, so you would see a higher number of tickets issued.” Ticketing statistics run on a seven-day delay due to transcription times, Stibbe said. The number of tickets reported Wednesday reflect the period up to, and including, April 10.
