The federal government has confirmed it will spend nearly $5 billion on Toronto transit projects over the next decade, and in a major boost for the city, the province has agreed to match that funding with $4 billion of its own.At a press conference at a Mississauga bus garage Wednesday, the federal and provincial infrastructure ministers announced the signing of a bilateral agreement that will pump $11.8 billion in federal money into Ontario public transit, green infrastructure, and community projects over the next 10 years.Of that money, $8.34 billion will go to public transit across the province. Based on a formula that allocates the money according to transit ridership, Toronto will receive more than half, or $4.89 billion. The city can use the funding to pay for up to 40 per cent of the cost of new transit projects.“The city of Toronto is getting a significant amount of money” said Federal Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi. “Toronto’s ridership is larger and we want the resources to go where the resources are needed.” In a coup for the city, Queen’s Park will match the funding for Toronto transit with $4.04 billion. A spokesperson for the Ontario infrastructure ministry said that sum is in addition to previously announced provincial investments in Toronto transit projects, including the $1.99 billion pledged for the controversial one-stop Scarborough subway extension.The details of how all of the new funding will be allocated have yet to be worked out, but the announcement from the federal and provincial Liberals takes the city that much closer to being able to fund badly needed priority transit projects.“I often say that the people of Ontario are best served when all levels of government work together,” said Ontario Infrastructure Minister Bob Chiarelli.The province had previously balked at Mayor John Tory’s request that it match the federal funding, with the Ontario Liberals arguing they had already ...
