For decades, the people of Grassy Narrows have said they are being poisoned by mercury. The pollution began in 1962 when a paper company began dumping the metal neurotoxin into the river that is the lifeblood of the community, contaminating the fish and then poisoning the people who eat it. Recent evidence suggests that all these years later old mercury is still leaking into the river system. And historical medical data now being released by the federal government is showing mercury levels in individuals, including in younger generations, high enough to have increased the risk of learning disabilities in children and heart conditions and accelerated aging in adults.You can read the Star`s ongoing coverage of mercury poisoning in Grassy Narrows here.The Star recently travelled to the northern Ontario community, about four hours east of Winnipeg, and talked to residents about how they believe mercury has affected their health.
