With lyrics now allowed in music, figure skaters embrace the soulful and the heavy metal

When Olympic figure skaters take to the ice and the music begins, long-time fans may notice something different: the Pyeongchang Games are the first to allow women, men and pair skaters to perform to music with lyrics.Previously, skating to music with lyrics could result in point penalties.Several Olympians have jumped on the lyrics train. They’ve embraced various — and daring — musical styles, from pop to soulful. Canada’s Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford won bronze and skated to Adele’s “Hometown Glory.”Adam Rippon, a U.S. figure skater, performed alongside a compilation of The Cinematic Orchestra’s “Arrival of the Birds” and “O” by Coldplay.Rippon, who reportedly declined to meet with American Vice-President Mike Pence, has won three bronze medals for the U.S. in the men’s single skating event.Mae-Berenice Meite of France performed to Beyonce — and to say the crowd liked it would be an understatement. And so, too, with social media; Meite responded to several Tweets celebrating the music selected to accompany her routine.“From the moment I saw you wearing that (fire) jumpsuit, I knew you were gonna be ICONIC, and then you go and skate to Beyonce,” another user wrote.Vanessa James and Morgan Ciprés of France broke out of the mold with their musical choice: “The Sound of Silence” by heavy metal band Disturbed.
