A newborn rushed to the hospital after being found outside a building in the west end of Toronto is in critical condition, police say.Toronto police taped off a large area of a plaza parking lot at Keele St and Lawrence Ave. W. for the investigation into an abandoned baby found at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The police were called half an hour later, police said.Paramedics transported the child in serious condition to a nearby hospital. The child has worsened since then, and is in critical condition, police said.It’s not known how long the child was exposed to the elements, police said. Initial reports were that two individuals found the baby on the ground at the rear of a plaza, “wrapped in a blanket” and they called police when they realized the baby was cold, Const. Jenniferjit Sidhu said. The baby was conscious and breathing when police arrived. The exact age of the infant is unknown. “The baby is possibly days old, possibly just a couple of weeks old,” said police media spokesperson Katrina Arrogante. “Any baby in that condition could be considered in a serious state, especially being found outdoors.” Eight officers and a row of cars focused on an alleyway under a sign for a hair studio and a dry cleaners.Employees looked on from their storefronts, and drivers stopped in the parking lot to take in the scene, some approaching police to enquire about the situation.Police are hoping to find witnesses or security footage of the area in order to investigate.
