Toronto to celebrate MLS Cup victory Monday with parade

There’s no telling when the Starbucks coffee and jerky may arrive. But Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan will make good on some of her other promises, as the loser of a bet with Toronto Mayor John Tory over who would take this year’s MLS championship cup. On Monday, her city hall is slated to be lit up in red and she’ll wear a Toronto FC scarf.(Durkan said that if her city’s team lost she’d also send a basket of Seattle’s best goodies, including signature jerky, salmon and cheese.)Here at home, we plan to do it up bigger! Hogtown’s going to kick off its Monday fete of our Major League Soccer champions with a parade through the city. “This season has been magical from the very beginning and the support from our fans and the entire city has been an important part of our success,” says Toronto FC president Bill Manning, according to a Toronto FC press release. “Our primary goal this season was to deliver a championship to Toronto and our fans and we can’t wait to share this moment.”Open-air, double-decker buses carrying Toronto’s winning soccer players, the MLS Cup, of course, and Toronto FC supporter groups, according to the press release, will depart Maple Leaf Square, at the Air Canada Centre’s west side, at 11:45 a.m.Along with the BMO/TFC Santa Claus Parade float — why not fete the big guy too! Tis the season! — the parade will snake its way through the city, heading north on York St., east on Front St. and then north on Bay St.It will end at Nathan Phillips Square, around 12:30 p.m. for an hour-long fan rally. If Tory had lost his bet against Durkan, he had said he’d light the Toronto sign green, wear a Seattle Sounders scarf and send a basket of Canadian goodies to the American city that may have included Tim Hortons’ coffee, maple syrup and a peameal bacon sandwich (there was no word on how he had planned to preserve its taste and integrity en route, however ...
