After a last-minute delay, the NPD Group today released its full report for September 2017 video game software and hardware sales in the United States. Starting with games, Bungie`s Destiny 2 topped the all-platforms chart, with NBA 2K18, Madden NFL 18, FIFA 18, and Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle rounding out the top five for the period.Total spending on games in the US during September amounted to $744 million, a dramatic increase of 49 percent year-over-year. Also notable is the fact that Destiny 2 had the strongest first-month spend than another game so far this year. Additionally, after just one month on the market, it surpassed Ubisoft`s Ghost Recon: Wildlands to become the best selling game of 2017 so far. With Call of Duty: WWII coming up in November, Destiny 2 may not hold the record for much longer. Destiny 2 is also now the third best-selling game of the trailing 12 months, only behind juggernauts like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1. The NPD Group also mentioned that Destiny 2`s total revenue in its first month--combining physical and digital--was stronger than Destiny 1. September 2017`s No. 2 game, NBA 2K18, is now the highest-selling sports game of 2017. Additionally, the pro basketball game enjoyed the `largest consumer spend in launch month of any sports genre title` since the launch of PS4 and Xbox One. Another software note this month is that Psyonix, the developer and publisher of Rocket League, is now part of the NPD`s Digital Leader Panel. This means that the NPD Group now tracks digital sales of Psyonix`s games. Rocket League didn`t make it into any of the NPD Group`s tracked sales charts for September 2017, however. Moving to hardware, revenue jumped 34 percent to $316 million. The Nintendo Switch sold the most units among current-generation consoles, though it was the PS4--which is more expensive--that generated the largest total consumer spend.
