OPINION: The fire stoked a week ago by the white supremacists and Nazi sympathisers who marched on Charlottesville, Virginia in defence of a monument of Confederate hero Robert E Lee has ignited into a tense national debate about the monuments to American history and this nation`s dark history of racism. Lee was the leader of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War from 1862 until its surrender in 1865. The Southern secessionists, whose opening salvo was to attack Fort Sumter in South Carolina, waged the war to keep and expand the insidious practice of slavery.
