Firefighters battling six-alarm fire at recycling facility in Port Lands

Toronto firefighters are battling a six-alarm blaze at a recycling facility in the Port Lands early Thursday morning, and the fire chief said it could disrupt some of the morning school traffic. Video and photos posted online showed smoke billowing into the night sky above the fire at 242 Cherry St., which Toronto Fire Services said was a Green For Life recycling facility.Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg was at the scene, where he told reporters he suspected it was “going to be a long night for our crews.” In order to get all of the trucks in, they inadvertently blocked off a group of school buses in a nearby parking lot, meaning there’s a possibility the morning commute could be affected for students. Pegg said the fire “escalated through the alarm levels very quickly,” adding that crews were “dealing with a fully engulfed structure.”On their website, GFL Environmental lists the building at the address as a solid waste transfer station and states the facility is a “hauling yard, solid waste material recycling facility.” According to Pegg, it was difficult for fire crews to know exactly what is in the recyclable material at the facility, which makes what he called the mixed-fuel fire “very stubborn.” He added that members of the hazardous materials unit were at the scene. Pegg said that there was visible heavy smoke when the first crews arrived. Part of the building collapsed later on, and fire fighters were staying outside the structure to fight the flames at a distance. With the building partially open to the elements, increased winds meant the fire was “swirling a bit,” a new challenge Pegg said they’d have to keep an eye on.One of their big concerns has become a nearby used mattress facility, where the fire spread after breaking through a fire wall.
