Woman stuck on crane at Wellesley and Church

A firefighter and a Police Emergency Task Force officer are almost in position to attempt the rescue a woman stranded on top of a construction crane in downtown Toronto this morning.The rescue plan is to have a responder lower themselves onto the block where the woman is and to secure her, explained Toronto Fire Platoon Chief Kevin Shaw. Once the woman is secured, crews plan to position the crane above the Paul Kane House Parkette and then lower her down, said Shaw.Due to the delicate nature of the rescue, the climb up has been slow.Police responded to a call around 4 a.m. that a person was seen on top of the crane on Wellesley St. E., near Church St. The woman climbed on top of the crane using the ladder, and then lowered herself onto the platform using the crane’s cable, said Insp. Colin Greenaway.Police have devised a plan to get the woman down safely using harnesses, said Greenaway. It was not immediately clear why the woman had gone up on the crane.Wellesley has been shut down between Yonge and Church Sts..
