The rituals of spring vary from place to place, tradition to tradition. In Toronto basketball, they have recently become routine: the existential panic, the changing of the starting lineup — like snow tires, reacting to the change of seasons — the badly designed free T-shirts, and the Kyle and DeMar Rorschach test. Every year, every year.But sometimes, things are simple. The Raptors, when they play like themselves, are better than the Milwaukee Bucks. To play like themselves, they need confidence. When it comes, it’s a hell of a thing.“No question. Seeing the ball go through the hole for everybody is contagious,” said coach Dwane Casey before Toronto’s 118-93 win over Milwaukee in Game 5, to take a 3-2 series lead. “I thought the first game at their place missing passes, missing shots was contagious. Everything was contagious that way. It goes both ways.”It can, as Toronto has witnessed with dread and loathing. Game 5 started with Kyle Lowry limping around with the stiff back that caused him to miss shootaround, and DeMar DeRozan missing shots, here and there. Lowry was lying down on the floor when he wasn’t in the game, which early in the game was a disquieting sign.But there was something there. Serge Ibaka, who went 4-for-16 in Game 4, hit a three, and dunked on a drive from the free-throw line. DeMarre Carroll hit floaters. Floaters! And, there was Norm.All season, Norm Powell was kept under glass, in case of emergency. He averaged 18 minutes a night, and his expression may have changed three or four times. The Raptors had a terrific year. He was fine.And in this series, he has been essential. Game 4 was a fascinating display of a team trying to knit together confidence and energy and belief, for lack of a better word, play by play.
