LIVE: Leafs and Capitals head to overtime in Game 6
(The Star Food)

We’re off to overtime for the fifth time in six games.Auston Matthews had given the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead midway through the third period.Marcus Johansson, with a goal at 12:51 of the third period, forced overtime. It was the 18th overtime of the opening round, an NHL record. The league had 17 overtimes four years ago. The last time Toronto played five overtimes in a series, was 1951 when Bill Barilko’s overtime winner won the Leafs the Stanley Cup.There were no goals in the second period, which ended in a 0-0 tie. The Leafs led on shots, 14-11. There were plenty of chances — a Jake Gardiner slapshot, a Zach Hyman wrist shot set up by Auston Matthews. At the other end, the crowd chanted “Freddie” for big saves, like ones on Justin Williams, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nate Schmidt. The first period ended 0-0, the first scoreless opening frame of the series. Toronto leading in shots 14-10. Neither could get anything done on their power plays, but a 4-on-4 for 1:38 did produce some end-to-end action. As for best chances, William Nylander, for the Leafs, shot a puck through the legs of Braden Holtby early in the period that trickled wide. Alex Ovechkin — booed whenever he touches the puck — had Washington`s best scoring chance late in the period. The Leafs must win to force a Game 7 on Tuesday. Washington just needs to win one game. The Pittsburgh Penguins await the ultimate winner. If there is a Game 7, the start time is 7:30 p.m., not the usual 7 p.m.QUOTES“I think Washington’s a beautiful city so I wouldn’t mind going back.” — Nazem Kadri“We’re ready to go home and say hello to the Verizon guys on Monday as well, just getting ready for series two.”— Kevin Shattenkirk“It’s been a lot of fun. It’s been real exciting. Obviously, we don’t get to see Maple Leaf Square but we see the reactions of it after. It’s been exciting. You can h ...
