Get ready to go dark, Toronto. Households and landmarks across the world will turn off their lights at 8:30 p.m. Saturday for the 10th annual Earth Hour. The global campaign, started in 2007 by the World Wildlife Fund, encourages people, businesses and communities to shut off non-essential electricity to save energy and show support for environmental sustainability. Last year, the event had the same impact locally as taking 36,000‎ homes off the grid, Toronto Hydro said. Other than flipping your own light switches, here are five ways to get out and enjoy your time in the dark. Earth Hour partyFestivities for the fifth annual Earth Hour party in the Beach neighbourhood start at KEW Gardens Park, at Queen St. E and Lee Ave., at 7:30 p.m. The park will be illuminated with candles and paper lanterns, while revelers can enjoy live music and dancing. Candlelit pub nightTo mark the occasion, Mill St. Brewery is hosting candlelit acoustic performances across Canada during Earth Hour, and donating $0.50 from each pint sold to Earth Day Canada. Shows are on at dozens of bars in Toronto, including the Gladstone Hotel, the Mill Street Brewpub in the Distillery District and the Stone Lion in the east end. Performances by an abundance of artists start at 8:30 p.m. Guided walksSeveral Earth Hour walks are planned throughout the city to mark the occasion. Downtown, the Parkdale and Roncesvalles villages plan to walk in two groups in support of climate action. Meeting at 8:15 p.m., one group will start at Queen St. W and Cowan Ave. while the other will begin at Roncesvalles Ave. and Dundas St. W., eventually combining into one at the intersection of Queen, Roncesvalles, King St. W and the Queensway.
