Know Your Galaxy: Andromeda
(GameSpot PSP News)

(Produced in partnership with EA) Before you head out into the Andromeda Galaxy with Mass Effect, find out how it came to be and just how long we have to prepare for its monumental collision with Earth. The Andromeda Galaxy is the most distant object you can see from Earth with the naked eye. As the nearest spiral galaxy to our own, it has helped astronomers to better understand the origin and evolution of such galaxies. The Andromeda Galaxy was formed roughly 10 billion years ago when smaller protogalaxies - vast masses of gas which galaxies are thought to develop - collided and merged. A single light year is over 9.4 trillion kilometres. This means the distance covered by the Arks in EA`s Mass Effect Andromeda on their 600 year journey is 23,651,826,181,452,000,000 kilometres. The Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way are travelling towards each other at a rate of 402,000 kilometres per hour. Experts predict they will collide in 4.5 billion years, and will ultimately merge and form a giant elliptical galaxy after a further billion years. The Andromeda Galaxy measures approximately 220,000 light years across, dwarfing the Milky Way and making it the largest galaxy in the Local Cluster.
