Cayden Nassar is bracing himself to get up extra early when he starts Grade 9 at Pickering High School next fall — no small challenge for your typical 13-year-old.While he’s dragging himself out of bed, his younger brother Ciaran will get an extra half-hour every day before he has to get to his classroom at Eagle Ridge Public School. “I’m going to be jealous all right,” says Cayden, who finds it hard enough to get out of bed as it is — even before the earlier start time kicks in next year at his new school.The schedule changes are part of a plan approved this week that will alter start times at 28 schools in the Durham District School Board. As of September, teens at Pickering High will start 15 minutes earlier — at 8:15 a.m. — while the Eagle Ridge bell moves from 8:30 to 9 a.m.“I think it’s going to mess a lot of people up,” says Cayden, who stood up and voiced his opinions on the matter at a board meeting Monday night, where trustees later voted to approve the plan.He says he and his classmates often have a harder time focusing first thing in the morning, and starting school earlier mean their grades will suffer.“I feel like high school kids should be going to school later, not earlier. I see tons of kids who are already tired as it is who have a hard time getting up on time.”New bell times are aimed at cutting costs and streamlining busing services and will see school start times shift by anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes. Trustees at Durham District Catholic School Board vote next Monday on the plan, which will affect 10 schools in that board.Most of the 38 schools in the two boards will see start times change by only 10 or 15 minutes, with eight moving by 15 to 25 minutes.
