My friend Norman Thomas di Giovanni, who has died aged 83, was an American-born writer and translator perhaps best known for his translations of the poems and stories of the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges, with whom he worked closely.Norman was born in Newton, Massachusetts, son of Leo di Giovanni, a landscaper, and Pierina (nee Fontecchio), who worked in a factory.
